Daycare and exterior kitchen for OIDHO (Organizaciones Indias por los Derechos Humanos en Oaxaca)
Santa Maria Atzompa, Oaxaca, Mexico, 2016
In collaboration with Be Root Studio and Building Trust International

OIDHO (Organizaciones Indias por los Derechos Humanos en Oaxaca) advocates for the human rights of people from indigenous communities in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. This organization provides free education on the rights of indigenous people, health, ecology, agriculture, etc. Their headquarters located close to Oaxaca city, have free shelters for members, an invaluable service as most live in remote rural areas and do not have a place to stay when traveling to the state capital for doctor’s appointments and varied errands.

OIDHO is developing new programs focused on women’s subjects. As women lack childcare while attending these programs a new OIDHO after-school space enables women to participate in educational workshops while their kids are also participating in after-school activities. Besides that, the after-school space provides the conditions to start a much-needed support and shelter program for female and children victims of domestic violence.

The project includes one multi-purpose room, an outside playground space and an exterior kitchen. The walls are made with traditional adobe bricks and playful micro windows made with discarded parts of steel profiles. Most materials are local and handmade, including the foundational stones, terracotta tiles, roof tiles and red bricks.

This was a participatory project built by local and international volunteers and trade professionals. Oficina led a two-week building workshop where students learned artisanal construction techniques hands-on while building the project.
This project was facilitated and financed by Building Trust International.
